It’s been brought to my attention, as commonly happens to me here on WordPress 🤭 that some of you are ready to learn more about the Tangled Moon universe, so here’s a little meat for the stewpot…
As many of you have probably noticed from the quotes I’ve shared from Tangled Moon, Danielle has a mental disorder that my werewolves call, Arrested Development.
Within the greater society of werewolves this isn’t an unusual condition. It would be like a human having ADHD.
It occurs among werewolves that were raised by mortal humans with no idea that they were a werewolf until they’d begun the transformation. (My werewolves are biological and not cursed/bitten, but that’s for another post.) When the change comes on, sometime between the age of fourteen and twenty it comes on hard. Even for werewolves that are raised around other werewolves it’s handled with a lot of care.
Danielle had been all alone in her transition for a year before Lothar found her. During that time her appetite had changed and she could only tolerate meat. Her adoptive family gave up on her because of her mood swings and the sneaking away at night.
She was lost and afraid with no idea what was happening to her. It wasn’t unusual for her to wake up at dawn naked in the forest, covered in blood with no idea what had happened to her.
Soon after she’d first met Lothar she’d lost her temper and attacked him. He got into her face challenging her. She wasn’t afraid of him at that moment. She was relieved. She was no longer alone in a world she didn’t understand.
That was the moment that had changed her whole life.
Her brain didn’t recover from her transition however. Due to the intense trauma she endured she’s trapped now between woman and wolf, with some seventeen year old girl mixed in. This creates three different personalities within her all juggling for attention.
There is no cure. It’s how she’ll be for the rest of her life. Lothar, as someone that was originally trained to work with werewolves that have her condition, is well aware of her mood changes and bends often with them to keep up with her.
Don’t worry though. She’s going to be all right. She may not realize it just yet (not from where the rest of you are standing, anyway) but as the song says, she will be loved.
