To Spite Him

Entangled (Tangled Moon Book Three)

…Kendra would never have children of her own, but she’d had plenty of time to accept that back when she and Jason had tried and failed. It just wasn’t meant to be for her. Speaking of children, what about that debt Alessandro said he owed?

“What is your debt?” she asked.

“What?” His warm palm smoothed over her back. “You mean my son?”

“Yes.” She settled her cheek against his sternum, took a moment to bask in his scent, his recently fed flesh—the remnants of his love in the soreness of her body.

“I created him,” he said.

“So, that’s it? You cursed him and now he’s your responsibility?”

“Remember how I told you Sha’re was influenced by Amon, and she in turn influenced me?”

“Yes.”

“When I cursed him I made sure that he would never love a woman.”

That got her attention. “Why?”

“I thought it would spare him, but instead all I’d done was to make him selfish.”

“Do you think he can’t love at all?”

“I’m sure he loves his son, but it’s not the same kind of connection.”

One that Alessandro didn’t live well without. There was no way his son could have understood him, when they were so very different from each other.

“If he got ahold of me, and changed me, he wouldn’t feel anything for me, would he?”

“It won’t happen,” he said distinctly. “I won’t let it.”

“I know that. I’m just speaking hypothetically.”

“He could curse you to love him, worship him even, but in his heart, it would be to spite me.”…
