…It was mid-morning, and they’d gotten their usual four hours of sleep. Darling had woken just after he had, wrapped her naked body up in the blanket, and then tucked her cheek against his sternum, mumbling something about there being no reason to get up yet.

He peeled her brown hair back from her face, ran the tip of his finger over the shape of her ear, so small, so seemingly delicate, like the rest of her. She wasn’t, not really. Small yes, but fast and fearless too.

He glanced wearily at her phone that he’d been using on the nightstand. The sound was off but it lit up every few minutes. It was Jacob, probably, or Nick and Vesper. Aside from Amanda and Noah, they were the only people still in contact with him. All other contact had ceased. No packs checking in with him, nothing from the other Council members…
