Deduction – A Regency Romance:

…Molly felt her shoulders tensing for battle. It was one thing to insult her, and another entirely to insult her friends. “They are two of the nicest, most interesting people I have ever met.”

All three ladies arched their brows. Mr. Hilton smiled. His gaze was trained significantly below Molly’s face this time. 

“I’m sure,” Miss Howard said. “What, with Mr. Daltrey, slumming around on the streets as he does. Did you know his father was a country doctor?”

“Yes, I did. It is a noble profession. Perhaps you have even made use of a doctor or two in your life.” Molly was shorter than Miss Howard, and had to stand as tall as she could to face her. “And I would not call keeping the streets safe, slumming.”…
