…βSo,β she really needed to start a sentence with anything other than, so, βthey must have known, somehow, that I existed, and then used me to get at you, since I canβt exactly turn into hundreds of rats and get away.β
It took him some time. Finally, quietly, βYes.β She felt him watching her. βThatβs why he bit you,β he said, tension now in his voice. βLazarus, the older one.β
She nodded. βI do remember that part, then everything got fuzzy.β
βThatβs how it can be,β he said. βIt keeps a victim sedated.β
βNice of him and all.β
He smiled but it was grimly done. βHe didnβt take much blood, it wasnβt the point. He was sending me a message.β
βWhat was the message?β She thought she knew but it was hard to take. All of this was hard to take.
βDid you notice how after he tied you up they simply left you?β his voice softened as if telling her something she might not take very well.
She nodded and he lifted his brows, prompting her. βSo that you could come get me,β she said.
βYes.β
βAll right, but,β she swallowed hard, βwhat was the message?β
He was struggling. It seemed he couldnβt hide it now. He was breathing, and harder than was normal. It drew her in and she found she was doing it too. A few more breaths and they were mirroring each other.
βThat they can take,β he had to stop to breathe, βwhateverβs mine away from me.β
There it was.
What was worse was that sheβd known that he would say that. She dropped the wine glass and it shattered all over the floor.
