Part Six

She took another sip, then looked at her plate and decided to set aside her glass for a fork. She took a bite, not really tasting it, swallowed.

“What do you want to know?” he asked.

“I don’t know quite where to start. How about, damn, there are vampires?”

 He smiled. “Was that a question?”

“I think there might be one in there somewhere.”

“Then yes, there are vampires. We don’t exactly broadcast our existence.”

“Makes sense, I guess.” She took another bite. She was hungrier than she realized. “Tell me how you knew I was there last night.”

“The vampires that took you are, or rather were, my father and brothers.”

“Were? As in you left them.” That did seem to fit. He wasn’t like them.

“Some time ago, although they don’t quite seem to take a hint.”

“All right, but you didn’t really answer my question.”

He seemed resistant to go further with that. Blue eyes tightened.

“Okay,” she said, not wanting to push him since he could, well, kill her and all. Don’t think about it, Catherine. “How about we start at the beginning. I don’t even know your name.”

He smiled a practiced kind of smile that people who were taught manners wore when introducing themselves. “Captain Jonas Sutherland, once under the command of General George Washington.” He ducked his head.

“Good God,” she breathed…
