She groaned. “Unbelievable.”

“What?” he asked, still holding her when he could have put her down already. They were at the table.

“Me, passing out, that’s what. God knows what happened after that.”

He laughed quietly. “Believe me,” he said, his voice low, almost purring. “You would have known if anything had happened after that, aside from my taking off your shoes and tucking you in.”

She felt her face warming. “Let me down,” she managed, her neck burning now.

He put her gently into the chair. He leaned closer and looked down on her with those eyes; hers disobeying her by latching hard onto his. His hair wasn’t so perfect anymore, bits coming free to frame his face.

“You have just endured what had to be the worst night of your life,” he said. She wasn’t getting that fuzzy feeling in her head this time. He’d changed tactics she realized, was taking a more human approach with her. “You need to feed yourself. You can ask me all the questions you need. I will take care of you, but please eat.”

“Um, okay.” She nodded. Anything to get him to back off before her skin self-combusted. He was coming on really strong. Sad thing was that he almost had her. His offer to take care of her sounded yummy…
