“You know you never even asked me if I had a boyfriend,” she said as if trying to create some emotional distance between them after she’d gotten too friendly.
He knew very well she didn’t, but played along anyway. “Then he should’ve taken better care of you.”
“Maybe he’s sending out reinforcements right now.”
“I am the reinforcements,” he said.
She sighed. “Okay, yeah. And you know there’s no boyfriend.” She set aside her glass, tucked her feet closer under her.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, careful of how sensitive she could be. “That there’s been no man for you.”
Her eyes widened, then she narrowed them. “Maybe there’ve been tons.”
He thought they’d already established this part. He forced himself not to smile and embarrass her further. He lowered his voice. “But there hasn’t.”
“Actually, none of your business.”
Actually, yes his business, but he didn’t tell her that. He was silent for too long and she looked away.
“Are you reading my thoughts?” she asked quietly.
“No. I won’t do that.”
“But you could.”
“Most vampires can.”
“Nice. That’s just great.”
“I haven’t,” he repeated.
“Then how did you know?” She glanced at him and then looked away. “Never mind, I don’t think I want you to answer that.”
He considered a moment before he spoke. “It was your reaction to me when I touched you,” he said.
She shrugged one shoulder, still not looking his way. “So?”
“You seemed surprised. It’s hard to fake that, even if you were the kind to try, which you are not.”…
