He hated it, but he couldn’t let her soul go at all. He knew that when it came to it he would curse it, trap it in the cage of a monster.
Selfish? Probably. But he didn’t make this happen to her. It just was. No one had asked him for permission to change him. He’d no idea vampires had even existed until after he was one. As least she would know, and she would be cursed by someone who, as cold as his dead heart was, loved her.
