She pulled on the ropes around her wrists for a time, but she wasn’t getting anywhere with them. Her wrists stung. She couldn’t see back there but she wouldn’t have been surprised if they were bleeding by now.
Catherine heard something outside. A woman screamed. Shadows flashed past the windows and people were running out on the street. She pulled harder. She had no idea what was going on, but there were people out there and what she needed right now, were witnesses.
Then her eyes widened as three huge rats came around the wall and headed directly for her. You’ve got to be kidding, she thought. She kicked out at one but her ankles were tied together. It wouldn’t give up. It came back again. The other two climbed onto her lap. If she hadn’t been gagged she would’ve screamed her head off. She whimpered as she felt them crawling around on her arms. The one on the floor was chewing away at her ropes. She sat there, watching in shock as it freed her ankles. She twisted her wrists and the ropes came loose. Catherine pulled off the gag and stood. Her feet had fallen asleep and she limped forward.
The rats looked back at her with their beady little eyes and she had the strangest feeling they were expecting her to follow them. Sure, trained rescue rats. I mean, why not? It could happen.
Yeah, right. But she wanted the hell out of there and if rats were the way, then fine, she’d take it…
