…She looked at him and he nodded reassuringly. Lothar let go of her hand and dropped to his knees.
“Don’t,” she croaked, her hand clenched into a fist against her stomach. “Please.”
He reached into the deer and got a hold of something. With a wrenching motion he pulled it loose and turned, holding it dripping out to her.
It was the heart.
She lost it then. Falling beside him, she cradled her hands around his and bent to it, yanking at the flesh, frustrated by her human teeth and getting angry when she couldn’t get at it fast enough. Next thing she knew he’d pushed something else at her, the liver. Yes, being softer, she could get at it. The kidneys and spleen were next, along with everything she could tear at with her teeth. She had no idea how much she’d eaten until at last she sank back on her heels, eyelids feeling heavy. She wanted to sleep it off…
