If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

Daily writing prompt
If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

I would love to make a law where everyone had to be polite to each other both online and in public. If you don’t then you get a ticket, like you might for speeding.

I wouldn’t want to eradicate free speech because that would be dangerous and everyone should be able to have their own opinion, but I’ve watched people agree to disagree politely with no vitriol and that just seems like the better way.

Whatever happened to politeness anyway? I’m a weirdo. I wear a lot of black and necklaces shaped like bats. I love spiders and listen to strange music, but I still know how to listen, to say excuse me and thank you. Or how to be a little bit patient with people.

I mean, how hard is it?

I wish we could go back to referring to each other as Miss, Mrs. or Mr. Smith. It’s like an instant boundary between people that demands polite conduct. Instead, we call each other by our given names immediately, or we just say things like, hey you. 😕

Mandatory politeness is a long-shot, I know, and I doubt it would ever happen, but wouldn’t it be nice?

  1. Personally, I’d suggest fixing it so the elected representatives can’t decide how much they get paid.

As for your change, that’s like having thought police. Think about how often things people say are taken out of context and end up with a different meaning. There are times when what someone says online comes across as rude when the person saying it may not have meant it that way. Yes, people are way more rude than they used to be but people also need to learn to NOT be offended by every little thing they hear or read.

Not trying to police at all. I just think it would be nice to have rules of engagement.

Yes it would. I heard somewhere that people turn to name calling when they realize they’ve got nothing intelligent to say! 🤣

  12. Good morning miss branwyn and how are you this fine day? I would make a rule that everyone has to do one kind act every day. I’m not saying that it it has to be huge or world altering or even life altering. It could be something as simple as making a drink for a loved one or opening a door for a person who is struggling. If you want to do something big to help then all the better if it doesn’t interfere with your own stuff. You would be surprised how the small stuff piles up.

Respect costs nothing, politeness costs nothing kindness costs nothing. Life’s ultimate deal and who doesn’t love a freebie?

Thank you, Miss (I know your last name from e-mails but I won’t disclose it here), I am well. I hope that you are too.
Thank you for your insightful comment. I agree, that kindness costs nothing yet is worth so much.

    Sincerely,
    Miss Branwyn

Love this post! I live in the U.S. South, and there was a time when politeness was next to godliness down here. It is still in many places. There’s even country songs about it. 🙂 We say Miss and Ma’am and Sir and Thank You. Rather than a law (laws never work) I wish we could program people. Oh, wait! We Can! It’s called teaching when young. What a lovely post, Miss Branwyn. And I’m weird, too. My neighbor told me that I was an anomaly. 🙂

I love you, gurl💓I wholeheartedly agree! I have been mocked and scorned for being strange and I am like…Are you contributing to my existence? Like the Three Dog Night sung “It’s Easy to be Hard.” I love being kind to all people and nowadays people care if you hear them within earshot. There is a tremendous lack of live and let live. They are not your Creator and their opinions aren’t worth a hill of beans. Keep on my lovely strange Sis-Star✨I love your style and your writing. Par excellence. I vote for that law to be put on the ballots of all hew-mens and hew-wemens hearts.

  30. When manners were the rule, there was also a lot of phoniness. And I hate phony people. I would rather hear someone’s true feelings and opinions than a lot of hogwash.
