Songs from my playlist: Waste of Time. Jonas, having no vampire family of his own was taken in by Lazarus and his sons, but he had never fit in with them and eventually left. Lazarus had never gotten over it, and has been looking for a way to get Jonas back.
…Catherine’s knees buckled and Jonas caught her before she fell. Poor girl. As if his father and brothers hadn’t given her enough trouble. Wait until she woke up, and inevitably realized what he was. He couldn’t let her out of his sight. It wouldn’t be safe for her. Nothing was safe now that his family had found her. Like it or not, he was all she had.
He lifted her slight body into his arms, recoiling at his father’s scent on her. At least his brothers hadn’t touched her. If they had, she’d have a hell of a lot more than shock to recover from. Jonas had freed women during the years that he’d lived with them—that had been before he’d stopped killing humans. His brothers had hated him for that, but he hadn’t been able to take the screams in the night; the futile pleas for help.
He made to put Catherine into the car, but her long brown hair fell aside, distracting him. Her throat, once spotless, an empty canvas for him to paint, was marred by his father’s fangs. Her pulse was beating hard, angrily beneath them as if in protest.
Lazarus had fed on her. Jonas knew his family had taken her because he hadn’t used her for his thirst. Lazarus had marked her as a warning to Jonas that he would never escape his family—to say, we were here first…
