“I wouldn’t have let that happen. And you know very well how to ride a frightened horse.”
“Gilburn doesn’t seem to think so.”
“He doesn’t know you like I do.”
She blew out a breath. “You could care that I might have gotten hurt.”
He eyed her over that, and then smiled. “Are you all right, my lady,” he said, so formally that she wanted to hurt him.
“You could ask nicely.”
“Are you all right, Zipporah?”
Now he sounded like he was making fun of her. “You understand nothing about women.”
It took him a moment. “You’re probably right.”
She wasn’t sure what to think about that, but she felt a glimmer of new hope anyway. Did that mean he hadn’t been with a dozen women since her? …
