Worth Fighting For:
England, 1192
β¦He wondered once again if this was the same woman heβd left last night. βYou just want me for my dog,β he teased.
βYou do come with her highest of recommendations. No, I think Iβd expected to see you this morning.β She shrugged. βSitting here alone gives me too much time to think.β
The smart thing to do would be to recommend some books be brought up from the library for her. But then again, Matthew wasnβt always smart. βYou can move into my room as soon as youβre ready.β
He heard her swallow audibly. She stiffened in his arms and then seemed to force herself to relax.
βYou can be in my chamber and not bed me,β he told her. He might not sleep very well, but then he wasnβt anyway so what did it matter? Actually, that wasnβt a bad idea. βYouβll be safer once youβre with me,β he told her.
βIβ¦ I suppose I would be safer.β
He felt a but in there somewhere. βBut?β
βBut you wonβt be safe.β
βLet me deal with that part.β
βI swear to God, Matthew, if you make me feel something for you and then get yourself killed I willβ¦β She lifted her head to look at him, her brow furrowing as she thought about how to threaten his dead body.
βIβll haunt you day and night, and you can tell me repeatedly what a fool I was,β he said for her.
βYou have a deal,β she saidβ¦
Repeat after me: I want to be a member. I want to be a member. I want to be a memberβ¦
