She leaned instinctively closer. He did smell good. “I was drawn to you from the start.”
“I know.” Pain flashed behind his eyes. She lifted her chin further to his face as he stood over her. “I can’t let you use me for your needs. My uncle knew. That’s why he put me on trial.”
“Then you don’t want me?” Danielle frowned. Well, that was confusing. His body had seemed pretty willing to get the job done that morning.
He shook his head as if she had him bewildered. “Maybe that didn’t come out right.”
She nodded. “Language barriers.”
“Had you never wondered why I kept you at arm’s length?”
“I thought it might be because you didn’t want me in that way. Or maybe your uncle.”
