And then he heard Catherine.

He moved quickly, at her side in seconds. She was in his bed, on her stomach, writhing and clutching the sheets, her knuckles turning white. She pressed herself onto hands and knees and peered at him through her hair, heaving air like a young vampire convinced it was starving to death.

 She’d been able to feel him feeding.

He didn’t second guess touching her. There was nothing else he could do. He took her warm frightened body into his arms, careful now, aware of how much pressure he was applying and how fragile she was. He lifted her face to his, looking into it. She touched her throat questioningly.

“Yes, that’s me. I should’ve known. I was distracted by my own thirst.”

He pulled her closer and she wrapped her arms willingly around his neck. She clung onto him like she couldn’t get close enough. She was so small that she’d practically climbed over his lap to do it, one thigh curling around him, setting off another kind of thirst—hunger—one he wasn’t used to feeling with this kind of intensity. Automatically his arm went around her, his hand cupping her bare thigh, cradling her to him.

He wanted her to lift her face to his, to bare her neck to him in willing offering—no, he wanted to lean her back on the mattress, to caress her soft, supple body until all of her fear washed away, until there was nothing left for her but him.

He wanted. Everything…
