“Did anyone ever tell you that you send mixed messages?” she said.

He walked over to the table and powered down his laptop. “Only for you, Darling.”

She sighed. “Nick asked me to spend the day with him. He wants to take me away from here.”

He closed his laptop. “And?”

“I might not see him at all.”

“How long will that last?” He leaned back against the counter in jeans that fit him all too well and yet another black shirt. He took a sip of coffee.
