…She sat back, looking at him with eyes that held all of her pain; pain she never should have had to experience in the first place.

“They found us later of course. Jeremy sent me away to hide while he kept them back.”

“He saved you, and that’s what he wanted to do.”

“I really thought for a moment that I would be all right. Maybe that was wrong of me, my parents, my other brothers… I don’t know what was wrong with me but I thought that as long as I had him, I would be fine.”

She was twisting his insides.

He hated what had happened to her, but he was also glorying in her—there with him—and no male but himself to take responsibility for her.

He understood her completely, when she said that she thought something was wrong with her. He couldn’t tell her why however.

“There’s nothing wrong with you,” he said finally. “He was your twin and probably your closest friend. As long as you had him you had something solid to hold onto.”…
