Tangled Moon:
…He was silent. She finally managed to look at him. The pained expression on his face—it was as if she’d just ripped his guts out.
“Lothar?” she whispered.
He took a breath, leaned toward her over the table. She sat there, frozen by him. He flipped a lock of her hair that was hanging over her face back to see her better. “I promise I will do everything I can.”
Everything he could? What did that mean?
She looked away, fanning her hair over her shoulder so that he couldn’t see her face. He’d know she was crying anyway, but there wasn’t anything she could do about that.
She stood, grabbing her coffee cup, still full. She took his too. “I’m going to do the dishes,” she said, walking away from him…
