Tangled Moon:
…Nick checked his phone when it chirped. There was a text from Lothar. She forgives you, it said.
He let out a relieved breath. Forever disappointing Danielle was one thing he didn’t want on his conscience.
He was glad they’d agreed to come for him themselves. There was no point in doing this in front of an audience at the castle. It was going to be hard enough there at the airstrip.
And then Nick knew Danielle was there. It was more than the open/close of the door behind him. He could smell her. She smelled great, like some rare spice—albeit laced with Lothar’s stink, but he was used to that by now. At least he hoped to God he was, because Nick had his own kind of aggression, more along the lines of extreme sarcasm, but dangerous in itself nonetheless.
Turning, he saw Danielle standing by the door in the dimly lit lounge, staring at him like she’d seen a zombie.
She actually had seen zombies, come to think of it. Man, she looked good in a sky blue sweater showing just the hint of perfect cleavage, and skintight jeans that might as well have been painted on.
It tore at him, that he’d left her with him. He’d been here, with her all this time, quelling her anxiety, drying her tears, soothing the beast within her.
Nick thought that he’d been prepared to resist her. He wasn’t. Not by a longshot.
“Hey, baby,” he said, pulling himself together by sheer will…
