…He caught her back up before she could pull away, kissed her once. She had the patience of a saint with him, even though he didn’t deserve it. “I don’t know what it is, but what I feel for you is like what I feel in battle.”
Her brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
He wasn’t sure what to tell her. “I’ll do anything.”
“For what?”
“To lie with you.”
It took her a moment. “What would you have done if I hadn’t wanted you like I do?”
“Well, not that.”
She made a face. “I know that part.”
“I don’t know. Hope that I could eventually persuade you. Burn for you until it drove me mad.”
Neither of them said anything, just breathed the same air for a while.
She lifted her chin. “So would I, if you hadn’t wanted me.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Why not?”
“Because that’s what scares me.”
She let out a breath, pushing away from him. “Well… this conversation isn’t over yet.”…
