What have I been Working on?(Non-Writing Version)

Daily writing prompt
What have you been working on?

Orchids. I’ve been keeping orchids.

Like a lot of people, I’ve killed my share of them in the past. I did have one that I kept alive for three years, and that was quite the accomplishment for me.

Recently, I found out that they need their own special kind of fertilizer (who would have thought, right!? LOL) and that does seem to be helping. The picture above is of my big orchid. It’s had flowers for three months now, so that’s a good sign, but I’m still getting this:

Frustration. 😤

Here’s my little orchid. He looks pretty good, but I haven’t gotten any flowers from him since July.

Again… Frustration.

At least they’re still alive. I’m getting better at this. I’ve heard that they can be complicated to keep long term. Too much of this, too little of that and they croak on you. I’m not sure I have the time or mental energy to try everything-under-the-sun to keep one alive , I have to admit. Maybe that’s the problem. They might need more than I can give them. 🤷‍♀️

  1. I love orchids. I haven’t begun to work on the one my daughter bought for me last year but I’ve been reading up on how to begin. I do very well maintaining plants maybe I’ll do well with orchids too. Wow, three years is no small feat. It looks like you’ve nailed maintaining orchids down.

  2. Orchids… so challenging! I’m impressed you’ve kept one for over three years. I wish we could make a year. Congrats, well done!

Oh cool. Thanks. I keep plants for forever so killing them isn’t normal for me.

I keep being told that. I have some house plants that I’ve had for YEARS… so killing them after three years seems off to me. LOL

Now I feel silly for posting that. Maybe my standards are too high?

  7. No way. It’s cool. We’re pretty self aware that this isn’t our strong spot. We just need to work at it more. I think your standards are just fine!

  11. You’re welcome. I mean it too. I have only succeeded in growing mold. I have 3 loafs of mold in my cabinets. I just keep using a different one and I’m running out of them. I have no idea about the refrigerator. I switched to frozen meals due to fear. It’s been working out pretty well.

  15. I was lying. I dont have 3 loafs. I only have 2. Does the wet towel garden under the sink count? I have kept it alive for, I don’t even remember doing this to be honest.

  20. Great work! We learn as we grow.
My wife and daughter recently planted our first garden this past Spring. Cherry tomatoes, green beans, pumpkins, and carrots along with some flowers.
I wound up becoming the one who had to water the garden on most days and it familiarized me a bit more with the care and keeping of the garden and the timing of the harvest etc.
I never fashioned myself as a gardner of any sort. But it has been fun and the credit goes to my girls!
Keep it up and it is good to hear about your journey!

  21. I love that you are willing to make the effort… I have always always wanted to raise Orchids, but alas, I live in an RV so I will stick with this tiny plant that I have somehow kept alive in here… Carry on fellow flower soldier… hugs

  25. Wow. They’re divinely pretty and fussy of course. I’ve had one myself. For more than 5 years. It’s purple and it’s plastic :)) yours are more beautiful and delicate of course.

Hi Darcy, the unique fertilizer bag says to fertilize once a week, meaning they must also be watered once a week unless you have them on sphagnum Moss. Then I would give it a few more days but not more than two weeks in between waterings

  27. I have a few I inherited at my office once the blooms fell off and another my daughter left with me that is now in three pots. The one from my daughter is a different kind of orchid but the ones I have at home go out to my patio each summer and live there until it’s too cold. They do bloom after they have been outside a while and I do keep them on a shadier part of my patio. I don’t think I’ve ever done more than give them a little miracle gro once in a while. The ones at the office need to be near a window to bloom but can’t be for now. Good luck.

  31. Orchids are so beautiful. My mom is literally obsessed with them and we have so many kinds at home. She keeps giving people orchid cuttings because we no longer have space to replant them. I never knew it was this hard to grow them, always seemed easy when my mom was taking care of them. I could ask her for tips if you are interested.

If you are willing I’d love that. I wish I knew how to do cuttings for orchids but I don’t. I can propagate most house plants but orchids don’t cooperate with me.
