Anticipation (Tangled Moon)

Danielle pulled off her boots and socks, and then gave herself a moment to enjoy the feel of the cool, spongy earth beneath her bare feet. The sun had set and she was going to hunt with Lothar and the vampires.

Lothar was faster than she was, shifting into a wolf and then pacing before her, all long powerful muscle and sinew beneath glossy black fur.

She stripped off her shirt, dropping it to the ground. She was in another one of her moods. They hadn’t tried the bed out yet and planned to do that after they’d hunted. She was looking forward to that probably a little too much; she wanted to tease him a little in anticipation.

Lothar’s pacing continued as she took off her bra and jeans. When she slipped out of her panties he stopped, as if compelled, and then he breathed her in.

He growled. Not an angry, hackles-raised kind of growl, but as if in frustration.

She shouldn’t have. It probably should have repelled her, but some part of her was intrigued by that. It had to have been her inner teenager. It couldn’t have been her adult half.

Then again, maybe it could.

She moved toward him, reaching her hand out. He lowered his head to her. She smoothed back the thick black tufts of hair, watched her reflection doubled in his eyes.

“Lothar,” she said quietly.

His ears swiveled forward attentively.

She kissed his face. Her mind reached out to his, probing him. He was more guarded than she’d expected, and then she realized why. He still had all these little parts of himself he didn’t want her to know about. She was more aware of them than she used to be; more open to them too, but he still wanted to protect her; both her mind, and her body from them.
