His eyes darkened immediately to black, his face shifting into the subhuman, high-boned shape of an angry werewolf. The coffee mug hit the floor with force and shattered.
Danielle froze in place. Oh, yeah, she’d gotten to him this time. She refused to flinch, even though her wolf instincts told her to stand down.
“Tell me to now, and I will rip male’s throat out for you,” he growled. It echoed in the cabin.
What the hell? Where had that come from?
She backed off from him, not in submission, but worried about him. If nothing more, he was her alpha, and he took caring for her wellbeing very seriously.
“Why?” she asked, her eyes burning with fresh tears. “Why would you do that?”
He slowly returned to human form. They both stood there in silence, save the sound of their breathing.
“Why?” she repeated. She had to clear her throat. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong.”
“Don’t lie to me.” She took a step closer to him. “We’ve been through too much for that.”
“I tell you.” He frowned, then switched to Lithuanian. “He’s young and foolish. He’s not worthy of you.”
“I never said I wanted him,” she said in English. “I want to stay with you. I mean… to be a Huntress.” Yeah, nice save, Danielle.
“I’ll protect you, regardless,” he said finally, slowly.
She shook her head. “You promised your uncle you wouldn’t put me first. I can’t do that to you.”
“I always put you first.”
She believed it. He was a high ranking alpha who currently was in a pack of two, so all of those instincts were directed onto her.
And truth be told, she liked it that way.
